Availability for Week of May 26

Happy Memorial Day. Please take a moment to remember those that have given the ultimate sacrifice and their families that have given so much too.

Since the weather has maybe moved towards late spring, the Market has added some new plants that will benefit from the warmer weather.

Salad fixings continue too along with Rusty Dog coffee.

What a way to start a day, a fresh cup of coffee and a scrambled egg dish with sauteed onions, kale, tatsoi and spinach!

Market opening Monday Morning

DeForest Locally Grown Market News

Forest Run Farm is cleaning out a hoop house and has green onions for sale: Extra large bunches! Asparagus will be offered for the first time this season. They are also offering lots of greens: spinach, mizuna, arugula, baby choy and Asian Greens. They will have small and large head lettuce in various green varieties, Lovage, chives and sorrel.

Vegetable plants are available for planting home gardens—peppers, tomatoes and head lettuce—but other varieties are coming. Note that CSA credit can not be used on plants, so please pay for them with cash or check.

Friday pick up will be 4-6pm at Forest Run Farm in DeForest. Please make alternate arrangements for pick up if needed. CSA members that pick up at Hilldale should arrive between 8 and noon. All Farmstand CSA members can shop at Forest Run Farm’s vendor location at Hilldale Farmers Market: Bring your punchcard. We still recommend pre-ordering so that you get the most variety.

Using Asian Greens

  • Many are the same plant family as our broccoli and cabbage and taste similar
  • They do not require long cooking; more importantly, cook them quickly, sealing in their sweetness by stir-frying or steaming
  • Try swapping Asian greens for mustard, Swiss chard, or spinach when preparing a favorite recipe
  • Health benefits include high levels of B vitamins, A and C vitamins, calcium, and antioxidants

Market News

Forest Run Farm is offering spinach, mizuna, arugula, baby choy and Asian Greens this week, produced in the Hoop House. They also have small head lettuce in various green varieties.

The herbs look wonderful! Lovage has a celery flavor, and is best first thing in the spring. Chives have arrived in the field.

How to use Lovage

  • Cook with lentils- saute a few leaves with onions, add lentils and cook slowly.
  • Chop the leaves and add to cream cheese—use as a stuffing in a chicken breast.
  • Pesto is traditionally made with basil, but can be made with most herbs. I use sorrel and lovage.
  • Lovage, chopped finely, can be used on a pizza topping.
  • Lovage is excellent with fish, such as salmon
  • Chop the leaves in a fresh leaf and herb salad- dress with your favorite dressing.
  • Leek and lovage soup- it sounds good and tastes fantastic- the leeks and lovage really work well together.

Preparing to Open next Sunday, May 4

Welcome!
DeForest Locally Grown is gearing up for another season of providing fresh local veggies to surrounding communities. We plan to open for the season next week, with Sunday’s announcement of the availability and Friday’s opening, May 9, for the first pick up from 4-6pm, at Forest Run Farm. The Market is currently displaying most of the items that were offered during last season to give you an idea of what you can expect from this market. Deforest Locally Grown is a net work of small farms that combine their products together in one market with a common pick up site. Most of the vegetables provided at this market are grown by Forest Run Farm. Sweet corn in season is provided by Ripp-N-Good Sweetcorn. And this year Rusty Dog is providing Coffee. DeForest Locally Grown is looking for more growers or producers to provide to this market; if you know anyone that would be interested in selling meat, cheese or bread, please let them know about this opportunity or have them contact Farmer@ForestRunFarm.com.

This years pick up location will again be hosted by Forest Run Farm, 3757 Mueller Rd., DeForest. Due to the complexity of this market, we ask customers to be punctual and arrive before 6 o’clock. Ordering via this on-line market does require customers to set up a free account. With an account, you will receive weekly emails that announce the offerings of the week. Ordering begins Sunday and closes each Tues evening so that growers can pick and pack the orders by Friday. Customers can order as often as they wish depending on their needs. Farmers often have additional quantities of produce available at pick up for additional purchases or for walk-up customers.

Payment is to be made at pick up by cash, check, prepaid credit or Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers (for Forest Run Farm produce only). Forest Run Farm offers a Farm Stand CSA which provides you with credit to use to purchase Forest Run Farm items from the on-line market. This year we are offering a pick up site for CSA-members-only at the Hilldale Farmer’s Market. If you are signed up for the Farm Stand CSA, watch your mailbox, as we are sending out your punch cards. Remember that you must bring these to market as your payment!
